THE Parish of San Pascual Baylon in Obando, Bulacan has decided to return a Nissan Navara pickup truck donated by former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) district engineer Henry Alcantara following reports linking him to alleged corruption in flood control projects.
In a statement, the parish said it initially accepted the vehicle in June 2024 “in good faith” to support its pilgrimage activities for the image of the Virgen de Salambao.
The pickup, it noted, was received “nang walang paghusga sa kalooban ng nagbigay.”
However, after Alcantara was implicated in Senate hearings on multimillion-peso kickbacks, the parish pastoral council met and agreed to return the donation.
“Napagkasunduan naming isauli ang naturang donasyon…sa pamamagitan ng angkop na legal na proseso,” the council said, citing guidance from the Diocese of Malolos and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
The parish apologized to parishioners and the public if the donation had caused concern, stressing its commitment to justice and transparency.
“Kung sakaling ito ay nakapagdulot ng alalahanin sa Simbahan at sa sambayanan, kami po ay humihingi ng paumanhin,” it added, quoting Scripture: “Bumuhos nawa ang katarungan na parang agos ng tubig at ang katuwiran na parang ilog na walang tigil.”
