Cardiologist Willie Ong will seek a seat in the Senate in the May 2025 elections amid his battle with cancer.
Despite his ongoing battle with sarcoma cancer, which he revealed earlier this month, Ong confirmed in a Facebook live that he will file his certificate of candidacy on October 2.

“Magpa-file po ako for senator. I’ll be filing for senator on October 2, Wednesday. Nagawa ko na ‘yung papeles, na-notarize ko na…Si Doc Liza…siya magpa-file nang sa akin pero ako ang tatakbo,” he said.
Ong said he would run as an independent candidate and would campaign on social media for the next year’s elections.
“I’ll do it the cleanest way. Hindi tayo connected sa admin, Duterte, opposition…Ako lang mag-isa, no one else. If they help me, thank you. Pag hindi, thank you. Wala akong utang, wala akong hinihigi…Walang kapalit,” he said.
Earlier this month, Ong described the tumor, measuring 16 centimeters and located behind his heart, as “deeply hidden” and blocking his esophagus, making it difficult to swallow.
He has undergone extensive testing and treatment abroad, citing frustrations with the slow healthcare system in the Philippines.
