NBI probes drowning deaths of Ateneo players

THE Department of Justice (DOJ) has ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to conduct a separate probe into the drowning deaths of two members of the Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball team during a team-building activity in Aurora province.

In a statement on Wednesday, the DOJ said the NBI would form a task force to investigate the June 8 incident involving 19-year-old rookie player Rene Baterbonia and 21-year-old Nigerian student-athlete Divine Adili.

The move comes a day after the Aurora Provincial Police Office ruled out foul play and described the deaths as a “pure accident.” Despite this, the DOJ said the NBI would carry out a “thorough, comprehensive and impartial” investigation to determine whether there is sufficient basis to recommend criminal charges.

Authorities said the two players were among a group wading in waters off a beach resort in Dipaculao town when they were swept by a strong current after reaching a deeper area. Two other players were rescued, while Baterbonia and Adili were recovered 30 to 40 minutes later.

Meanwhile, Baterbonia’s family has yet to decide whether to pursue legal action. His mother, Rovelyn, said she would first focus on her son’s funeral and await further information from Ateneo. An autopsy on Baterbonia’s remains has been requested by the family.

The Senate, NBI, local government, and police authorities are conducting parallel investigations into the tragedy.
