The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has initiated an investigation into Bamban Mayor Alice Guo and related companies for potential tax evasion, following orders from BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr.
Commissioner Lumagui emphasized the agency’s full cooperation with the ongoing Senate inquiry and directed BIR officials to scrutinize the financial records of individuals and entities mentioned during the hearings. “I have commanded the whole BIR to cooperate with the Senate and look into the mentioned names of individuals and entities as well as their accumulated wealth. The BIR will fully cooperate with the Senate investigation on Mayor Guo,” Lumagui stated.
The BIR’s investigation will assess whether the income declared by Mayor Guo and the associated entities aligns with the wealth accumulated during the relevant taxable years. Any discrepancies may result in the filing of criminal charges for tax evasion. “If the income declared with the BIR does not match the value of the properties amassed during the same taxable years, criminal cases for tax evasion will be filed. The same charges can be filed against conspirators and the corporate officers of the companies used to amass such wealth,” Lumagui added.
The Senate investigation, which is being closely monitored by the BIR, has revealed significant cash holdings, properties, and other assets. These must be justified by appropriate tax payments.
The BIR has also called on informants from both the private sector and government agencies to provide documents and evidence that could support the audit of Mayor Guo and the involved companies.
